Japanese Encephalitis Virus – raising awareness of protection measures

Department of Health, Disability and Ageing

A concerning number of cases of JEV sparked the need for a national campaign to drive awareness of protective measures in at-risk areas and for those most at risk of infection. The task was to ensure the Australian public had clear, factual and timely information about the public health risk posed by JEV.

Communication regarding mosquito protection was prepared to target affected communities initially, including those working in at-risk agricultural settings. Communication activities were focused on increasing awareness of JEV and informing people about what precautions people should take, symptoms to be aware of and how to seek treatment.

Fenton worked closely with specialist advertising, CALD and First Nations communications agencies to ensure a fully integrated approach with messages tailored to specific community groups.

The national integrated campaign drove awareness and helped achieve a downturn in cases of JEV in the community.
